Introduction
Cricket has been around in some form or another since at least the 16th century, when it was played by prisoners in colonial Australia. Since then, the sport has undergone many changes and had its ups and downs, but it’s still going strong today. Despite being overshadowed by other sports in some countries, cricket remains popular in most of the world. Here’s what we know about cricket so far!
The History of Cricket
The earliest forms of cricket are believed to have developed in England and France around 700 AD. The sport originated as a variation of an earlier game called cob-ball, which involves hitting a ball with a wooden club. These early forms of cricket involved batsmen, who would strike balls bowled at them by bowlers. While there is evidence that suggests cricket was played in medieval times in many different parts of Europe, it was not until 1700 that it was formally recognized as an organized sport.
The Need for International Cricket Council
The sport, played all around is a nationalistic form and it has been always doubted whether it should be limited only to some countries. Recently, International Cricket Council (ICC) declared that they want to expand cricket in even more countries around the world and make it one of top 5 sports with soccer, hockey, rugby etc. There are several reasons why international cricket council is doing so. Top 10 reasons are as follows
Culture and Importance of Cricket
The culture and importance of cricket in various countries has varied over time. Overall, cricket enjoys high cultural significance in England and Wales, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and other parts of Commonwealth of Nations as well as Afghanistan (although Afghanistan are not currently a Full Member). It is popular among children in most of these countries with television viewer ship being significant. The Indian Premier League is one of the most commercially successful leagues in world cricket.
How Indian and Pakistani People View It
Although popular in India and Pakistan, cricket has recently been experiencing a drop in viewer ship. This is due to many Indian fans’ disgust with match a fixing scandals the third of its kind since 2000. In addition, cricket’s costliness can be blamed for declining viewer ship: tickets are too expensive for most commoners to afford, despite reduced prices. Fans of bowlers have also noted that more batsmen are being hired as opening bowlers—meaning more runs are scored before wickets even fall!
Other Countries with Popularity in Cricket
Australia and India are probably two of the countries that top 10 all-rounders come from. After being so successful at test matches, they were much sought after in county cricket. Australia's record is unbeaten, while England’s has many famous upsets. Cricket is a big sport there, with professional teams and crowds that get tens of thousands every weekend during season. Every state has their own team too!
